The Effects of Your Favorite Thanksgiving Food on Your Teeth

Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays in America. But while this tradition brings together families and encourages gratitude, it also poses a great risk to your dental health. Aside from reunions, this holiday is also about Thanksgiving feasts – usually hordes of food, meat and sweets all ready to find sanctuary in the nooks and crannies of your mouth. If you are not careful, you might get more than just a couple of extra pounds after Thanksgiving.

Here are some of the most common food served on the table during Thanksgiving and what effect they can have on your teeth:

Turkey – Packed with protein, the turkey is usually the star of the Thanksgiving feast. However, the meat can easily get stuck in between teeth.

Cranberry Sauce – Naturally, the turkey is often paired with cranberry sauce to complete the recipe. The downside to this yummy sauce is its sugary and sticky design, which can stain and damage teeth.

Yams – The popular yams are rich in nutrients as well as Vitamins A and C. When prepared as candied yams, the sticky recipe can find home in cavities and between the gumline.

Macaroni and Cheese – Another holiday favourite, the Mac and Cheese is a delicious treat that also has a sticky, gooey sauce that is made with dairy, sugar and starch.

Mashed Potatoes – While potatoes are a great source for potassium and Vitamins B6 and C, they are starchy, which is attractive to cavity-causing bacteria.

Pumpkin Pie – Pumpkins help keep your gums and enamel healthy with Vitamin A but when mixed in with sugar and dairy for a pie recipe, it becomes a little more risky to eat.

Generally, all kinds of food can damage your dental health but that doesn’t mean you should avoid eating altogether. The key to a healthy, cavity-free smile is making sure you regularly clean your teeth, tongue and gums after each meal.

Dentists recommend brushing twice daily with a proper toothbrush and fluoride-rich toothpaste to keep your teeth healthy. Regular flossing is also necessary to ensure that there are no leftover pieces of food stuck in between your teeth, which are often the cause of cavities and gum disease. Keeping up with a regular teeth cleaning schedule daily will protect your teeth from damage. Of course, regular dentist visits are also a must. Getting your teeth done by professionals will ensure a more thorough cleaning.
